Details

Gonggeomji, also known as Gonggalmot, is a reservoir that was reconstructed in Sanhan Dynasty, such as Uirimji Byeokgolje, and has undergone several renovations in history, but the specifics have no clear path. However, in 195 (Goryeo Myeongjong 25) Sangju Sarok Choe Jung-bin reconstructed it and the length of the moss bank was as long as 860 steps. And the length of the area around the lake is recorded as 16,640 cubits long. When the pond was filled with water, the depth of the water was 5 times long.

On the west side of the pond, the lotus flowers were in full bloom, and the view was similar to that of Jeondangho in China. According to the history, it was said that the ice of the pond was frozen and predicted the famine and the rich year. Also, on fourteen days prior to Jeongwol night, cows are said to sweat because they were used to grind ice in the pond at night. There is also a story about Gyeongju's a female dragon from Yongdam married to a male dragon in Gonggalmot.

There is also a saying that even if roasted beans are eaten one by one while riding a horse and going around the pond, you will run out of beans. The myth was, “Those who have not seen Gonggalmot in the afterlife will be sent back to this world.” In the Hamchang town there are several lotus flowers in the western half of this pond. It is said that it has a taste that resembles the Jeondangho of China, and it speaks of its beauty and the scenery of lotus. Therefore, people who have visited this place since ancient times have left gem-like writings reminding them of their beautiful scenery. The name of this pond, called Gonggalmot, is said to have been named after Maeaseolhwa (Honggeomji Gate of Hong Guidal) who buried a child named “Gonggal” when creating the pond.

Likewise, the inhabitants have believed in this pond as a mysterious and horrible land. There are also various names according to the method of construction, Gonggalmot, Gonggeonje(功建堤), Gonggwonje(公券堤), and depending on the size of the pond, Gyeongho(鏡湖), Sayeon(蛇淵), Geomho(劒湖), and Geomho(劒濠). Now, a legend like this and a song with lotus seeds are the reminders of Gonggalmot. The pond has turned into a rice field and has no way to find its old shape and scenery. But the tomb that informs the old pond stood lonely, stopping the way of the visitors coming to this place and have them turn back in disappointment. Gonggalmot may possibly be reminded of our mother because of the song about lotus seeds. This song is a private song formed by the background of Gonggalmot. Locality and soil property are deeply divided into this folk song, and the contents of this song included Yeonjeong, Sachin, Wanwolgwaneo, Horyeon.

There are basic type, compound type, abbreviation type and refrain type in the form. This song can be said to be a representative Korean folk songs that targets Southeastern and younger sisters. It can be said that this song group has a value as a unique intangible cultural property of the province, which is preserved in this region, centered in Sangju and Hamchang. In addition to this Gonggalmot song(aka Gonggalmot Chaeryeonyo), there are Seolhwa including Maeaseolhwa(埋兒說話), Jeungjuseolhwa(승柱說話), Ssangyongyeontuseolhwa(雙龍戀鬪說話), Yonggyeongseolhwa(龍耕說話), Ugyeongseolhwa(牛耕說話), Jihyeongseolhwa(地形說話), Jikimiseolhwa and more, and hundreds of pieces of Hansi(漢詩) are left.

Also, the area around Gonggeomji has been a farm and freshwater fish market since ancient times, and the role of the tourist site is well worth the fact.
