Namjangsa Temple, at 502 Namjang-dong, Sangju-si, is a traditional temple under the Jogye Order. It is one of Sangju 4 Jangsa (尙州四長寺, Bukjangsa, Gapjangsa, Seungjangsa ? currently not available).

In 830 (King Heungdeok 5), Jinguguksa, who returned home from Tang Dynasty first stayed in the temple. The name of the temple at that time was Jangbaeksa(長栢寺). In 1186 (Goryeo Myeongjong 16), Jangbaeksa was reconstructed and renamed as Namjangsa Temple by Gagwonhwasang.

Jingamguksa learned Buddhist chants in Jongnamsan, China, and returned home at the age of 57 in 830. In 832, it was the first place in Korea to establish Muryangjeon (now Bogwangjeon) and to offer Buddhist chant (Buddhist music, a song that praised the merit of Buddha).

At that time, the patients gathered in the clinic as much as the clouds. This buddhist chant, along with pansori and song, is one of the 3 vocal songs of our country.

Previously Ssanggyesa, located in Jirisan of Gyeongnam and Hadong, was known as the first source of supply. Sangju Wangbaeksa became known as the first source of buddhist chant from the inscription of “Jingamseonsa Daegongtapbi” by Chee Chi-won in Ssanggyesa.Major relics include the preservation of Buddhism masterpieces such as Seated Iron Buddha (Treasure No. 990) and Buddha Figures Sculptured in Relief on Wood (Treasure No. 922). Iljumun was designated as a Local Cultural Property, No. 442 (2003), and is known as a treasure house of Buddhist art.
