After 1945, our region receded from being the center of politics, economy and military. The railway network which became a new form of transportation in the era of industrialization was shunted from our region, and the water transportation using the Nakdong River lost its roles to trains, which were the main reasons why Sangju was left as an agricultural area during Korea’s commercial and industrial development.


On July 4, 1949, Legislation No. 32 was promulgated and according to the Local Government Act that came into force on August 15, 1949, the local administration organizations consisted of Special City, Province, City (Si), Gun, Eup, Myeon, Ri, and Dong.


On July 1, 1966, 5 branch offices including Seobu Branch Office in Moseo-myeon were established, and Jeoeum-ri, Ian-myeon, Sangju-gun was incorporated into Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong-si. On May 1, 1979, 4 branch offices including Jungbu were established in Sangju-eup.


December 1, 1980, Hamchang-myeon was upgraded to Eup, and on January 1, 1986, Sangju-eup was upgraded to Si (City). On January 1, 1989, part of Yunjik-ri, Hamchang-eup, Sangju-gun (Yunjik-2-ri) was incorporated into Jeomchon-si, and on April 1 of the same year, Nambu branch office in Hwabuk-myeon was upgraded to Hwanam-myeon.


On January 1, 1995, Si and Gun were incorporated into the urban and rural composite town, making 1 eup, 17 myeons, and 7 dongs.


On July 1, 1995, the 1st local government elected by popular votes was launched, followed by the 2nd local government with elected officials on July 1, 1998.


On October 12, 1998, due to the incorporation and consolidation of administrative districts, Jungang-dong was incorporated into Dongmun-dong, making 1 eup, 17 myeons, and 6 dongs.
