The Gyeongsangbuk-do Sericulture & Insect Business Center is the province’s specialized institution dedicated to sericulture and insect-related industries. It plays a vital role in preserving Korea’s traditional sericulture heritage while promoting the development of functional sericulture and future-oriented insect industries.

Situated on a 146,000㎡ site, the center consists of 15 facilities, including the Main Building, Research & Testing Center, Silkworm Rearing Facilities, Experience Learning Hall, and Exhibition Center. As the core institution supporting Korea’s sericulture sector, it distributes silkworm eggs to farmers and remains the only facility in the country that produces raw silk directly from silkworm cocoons.

In addition to its research and production functions, the center serves as an educational and tourism destination where visitors can explore the history and value of sericulture. The Silkworm & Insect Experience Learning Hall features sericulture-related artifacts and products, butterfly specimens, special silkworm exhibitions, and a variety of hands-on activities, including silkworm handling, rhinoceros beetle experiences, cricket and aquatic insect observation, and silk-reeling demonstrations from cocoons.

The Insect Ecology Exhibition Hall and Insect Ecology Park are dedicated to the conservation and propagation of beneficial and endangered insect species while promoting ecological awareness. Through exhibitions, outdoor learning spaces, and interactive programs, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the harmonious relationship between humans, insects, and the natural environment.

A distinctive feature of the center is its extensive mulberry plantation, covering 41,886㎡ and cultivating 21,397 mulberry trees. As the starting point of the sericulture cycle, the mulberry fields provide visitors with a unique opportunity to observe the living connection between mulberry trees, silkworms, cocoons, raw silk, and traditional silk weaving. The plantation serves as both a production site and an outdoor educational space that showcases the foundations of Hamchang’s centuries-old silk culture.

The center also plays a leading role in organizing cultural and tourism events that celebrate the region’s sericulture heritage. Every autumn, it hosts the Nunnu-nanna Insect Festa, a popular festival featuring silkworms, butterflies, insects, and hands-on ecological experiences. Each May, the center organizes the Sangju Pungjam Prayer Ritual for Prosperous Sericulture, a traditional ceremonial rite that honors the spirit of silkworms, prays for a successful silkworm harvest, and preserves the cultural values of Korea’s sericulture tradition.

As a key institution supporting Hamchang Silk Village, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Sericulture & Insect Business Center connects the entire silk value chain―from mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing to cocoon production, raw silk manufacturing, and traditional silk weaving. By integrating heritage preservation, ecological education, research, and tourism, the center serves as an important cultural landmark and a living showcase of Korea’s sericulture tradition.
