Introduction (Details)
Hamchang Art Trail is an open-air cultural and artistic route that reinterprets the history, culture, and everyday lives of local residents through art in Hamchang, one of Korea’s most renowned silk-producing regions. Developed between 2014 and 2015 as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Village Art Project, the trail transforms the entire village into a living gallery, connecting Hamchang Station, Gaya Village, Hamchang Traditional Market, and Batanggol.
The project was created under the theme “Geumsangcheomhwa (錦上添畵)”, a phrase meaning “adding a painting to silk brocade.” Reflecting Hamchang’s long history as a center of silk production, the theme symbolizes the addition of artistic value to the village’s rich silk heritage, enhancing the beauty and cultural significance of the community. It represents a vision of connecting Hamchang’s silk culture, local traditions, and future development through art.
What makes Hamchang Art Trail particularly meaningful is its community-based approach. Local artists and residents worked together to plan and create the project, transforming public spaces into places that reflect the identity and stories of the village. Sculptures, murals, installation artworks, and community art projects throughout the trail portray the history of Goryeong Gaya, the tradition of Hamchang silk production, the atmosphere of the traditional market, and the memories and daily lives of local people.
Many of the artworks are inspired by sericulture and traditional silk weaving, visually expressing the journey from mulberry trees and silkworms to cocoons, silk thread, and fine silk fabrics. Through these artistic interpretations, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and industrial heritage that has shaped Hamchang Silk Village for centuries.
Walking along the trail offers more than an art experience―it is a journey through the history and living culture of Hamchang. Visitors can discover how traditional industries, community life, and creative expression have come together to create a distinctive cultural landscape.
Today, Hamchang Art Trail stands as a successful example of heritage-based cultural tourism, where industrial heritage, local culture, public art, and community participation are harmoniously integrated. As part of the Cittaslow (Slow City) movement in Hamchang, the trail highlights the value of sustainable tourism while celebrating the unique identity of Hamchang Silk Village.
